about

"3 Movements" is the second release by HACK, the project of Minneapolis violinist and noise-provocateur Manny Castro.

Following his self-released, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink debut, "Decade," "3 Movements" finds Castro pushing the boundaries of the project outwards and refining his musical approach by harnessing the power of pure chaos.

Recorded in a manner that recalls HACK's live show - which is as likely to be Castro screaming into a vocoder over bleary projections as it is a conventional musical performance - the recording of "3 Movements" wrangled every bit of gear and personnel in the Attic into a single, efficient instrument of drone.

Much of the album-length piece has a subdued, ambient feel to it that barely contains the chaos bubbling up underneath; errant free-jazz drumming, distorted synth drones, choppy loops and amp-destroying sub-bass rumbles all move together under a cloud of smoke and reverb to create a single drone that alternates between soothing and punishing. This restraint makes the points where the piece explodes, as it does in the second movement, all the more shocking and violent.

It's an unpredictable and beautiful piece of music by a strange project that keeps dodging expectations in search of the perfect rumble. With "3 Movements," HACK has gotten dangerously close.
